Close to two decades of exploring and engaging with the art and craft of storytelling — producing several milestone projects in everything from advertising to mobile content, features and short films to live events ... the medium and technology has changed over these years, but the objective has remained the same: entertainment.

 

The real meaning of the word "entertainment" is to allow into one's mind and to relinquish control of one's senses. This is indeed a great responsibility for any entertainer. The rewards are great when we succeed at the task of truly entertaining the audience, and the woes are just as bitter when we miss the mark. 

 

In movies, more than any other medium, we have to add another component to the mix: finance. The risks are quadrupled and the waters soon get very murky. Risk mitigation becomes the core concern and soon it begins to encourage compromises on all fronts.

 

Thomas applies a very simple philosophy to all his projects, "Thorough preparation and planning is the first step to illuminating problem areas and eliminating the pitfalls."

 

There is no greater assurance than knowledge gained from experience. Lining up the most experienced team members is a solid foundation to start working up from. Once the bases are covered only then can we explore and push beyond the existing boundaries to create something spectacular.

 

Just like any other industry, the movie business cannot rely entirely on a sustenance model: producing remakes and franchise ventures. Research and Development (R&D) is a critical component of all successful companies in just about any field. A good mix of sustenance models and innovation will guarantee growth.

It is not a threat, but a reality one must face and not avoid. Do read up about Blockbuster and Netflix. Thomas strongly encourages producers and studios to diversify and create a slate of movies; some that operate on the tried and tested principles with star attachments and other risk mitigating models and a few ventures that are brave and encourages new thought.


